The virtual IP address (virtual IP address, occasionally also VIP) designates the dynamic IP address asset/passive cluster, under which the momentarily active primary system is addressed. All computers of the group have individual addresses, while the virtual IP address is lent additionally to the active system. It stands therefore representatively of the entire cluster.
The cluster is always addressed from the outside via the virtual IP address, so that the active system is reached automatically. In case of a Failover a Standby system is activated and receives now the virtual IP address. Thus all further connections with the again activated system are manufactured, so that this takes over the function of the failed knot.
