Subdomain and/or one calls a Domain, which lies in the hierarchy below another with the Domain Name System.
Generally with it Domains are meant linguistic usage in third or a further level. One calls Domains, which lie directly below the Top level Domain (TLD), usually not as Subdomains but 2nd-Level-Domain or only Domain.
Top level Domain de. Second level Domain wikipedia.de. Subdomain of de. Third level Domain extern.wikipedia.de. Subdomain of wikipedia.de. Hostname ftp.extern.wikipedia.de. Hostname under Subdomain externally
There are different reasons for the employment of Subdomains:
E.g. for distributed branches or departments of a company is used to lead for independent Web appearances such as beiwww.de.wikipedia.org, www.en.wikipedia.org," or around E-Mail at branches with own Mailserver.
A Subdomain alone for this purpose to put on is meaningfully only if there are several host names or further Subdomains under the Subdomain, e.g. mail.extern.wikipedia.de and ftp.extern.wikipedia.de. Otherwise host names are sufficient i.d.R.
A Subdomain can be administered - like a Domain - on any name server. So de.wikipedia.org on a name server in Germany could be e.g. administered, while wikipedia.org lies in Washington DC. See in addition DNS delegation.
Some Dienstleister use this possibility and offer 3rd-Level Subdomains with forwarding for a longer URI. This has the advantage for the offerers that they can to even furnish and thus only minimum costs develop these - differently than with 2nd-Level-Domains -. Popular Subdomains for German sides is subdomain.de.TLD with different Top level Domains.
