The open root server network (Abk. ORSN) was brought 2002 as alternative to of the ICANN coordinated DNS root servers into being.
The task of the ORSN is it to guarantee the dissolution of name in the Internet by a further root server network which is technically compatible to 100 % with the ICANN root, but is exposed not to the political influencing control of the ICANN. ORSN is not profit-oriented and has therefore for example not the goal of extending the own root zone by additional Top level Domains as it is aimed at by some organizations for commercial reasons.
Twelve ORSN servers are in Europe and by different ISPs are operated. Further, claimant by Paul Vixie, is in San Jose (California) in the net of the ISC, like also a local Anycast knot of the F-ICANN-ROOT-server.
A total failure of the ICANN root server network is generally excluded by the redundant interpretation. It is criticized against the fact frequently that the ICANN has a too large influencing control by the root servers on the enterprise of the Internets. Since the ICANN is contractually to the US Ministry of Trade subordinated, fear some critics, which would know a switching or a bending of certain Top level Domains off as an argument for the penetration of political goals is used.
The ORSN project represents no isolation of the Domain Name System, is however the influencing control of the ICANN to limit. The moreover one many expect a positive side effect on the access times by the distribution of load on ICANN and ORSN servers.
Beside the root servers, which can be used only by operators of own resolver name servers, ORSN operates two public resolver name servers, which can be used by everyone. They are attainable under the addresses ns1.de.eu.orsn.net (217.146.139.5) and resolver.data-union.net (62.157.101.211) and use the ORSN root servers.
