A domain and/or a Domain (to the word origin see domain) is a connected subrange of the hierarchical DNS Namensraumes. A Domain always covers the entire subordinated tree structure on the basis of its Domainnamen (in contrast to the zone). The name of a Domain is at the same time also their FQDN.

Example: The Domain wikipedia.de is given. Further a host www.wikipedia.de as well as the Subdomains intern.wikipedia.de and extern.wikipedia.de and still another host mail.extern.wikipedia.de exist. All these knots belong to the Domain wikipedia.de.

The mentioned Subdomain extern.wikipedia.de is independently again a Domain, to which only the knot mail.extern.wikipedia.de belongs. Domains below Domains are called also Subdomains.

Domains of the highest level (e.g. .de or .com) are called also Top level Domains (TLDs). The Domains is called corresponding second and third level Second and/or Third level Domains.

Of the IANA Domainnamen were reserved, which one can use in own documentations and test environments. An example of it is the Domain example.com. Sense of this reservation is to avoid conflicts with material existing Domainnamen. The reserved names are fixed in RFC 2606.

At the end of April to 2006 were registered according to DENIC over 9.8 million.de Domains. In March 1996 the number of the registered.de Domains had exceeded the 10,000, in December 1997 the 100,000, in October 1999 the million-border had been exceeded. At present each year about one million.de domains are added again.
