The DENIC EEC (German Network Information Center) is the central registration place (Registry) for Domains below the Top level Domain .de.
In November 1986 the Top level Domain .de in accordance with ISO 3166 as landreferred Top level Domain (ccTLD) for Germany was registered in the IANA data base. The first Domain below .de was university dortmund.de, since the name server enterprise for .de of the university Dortmund was carried out at that time. This freiwillige service carried already the name DENIC.
In August 1993 it came due to increased demand for Registry services to the establishment of the IV-DENIC ("interest group German Network Information Center ") by different institutions and Internetprovider. The administrative and technical enterprise was accomplished by the University of Karlsruhe and financed of the IV-DENIC. Due to the unanimity requirement with retakes the growth possibilities of the IV-DENIC were however limited, so that this was converted in December 1996 into the today's cooperative DENIC EEC.
The administrative enterprise was transferred by a again created office to Frankfurt/Main, the technical enterprise remained immediately two further years in Karlsruhe, before it likewise changed then to Frankfurt. In October 1999 the einmillionste Domain could be registered, two years later was it already 5 million and well over 100 members. Growth flattened in the future, oscillated themselves then however on a relatively stable level. In January 2004 the DENIC started the enterprise of the first root server in Germany and starting from March of the same yearly could Domains with umlauts and other foreign language indications (IDN Domains) be registered for the first time. Altogether 92 new indications of the use were introduced to Domainnamen. The first registered IDN Domain was .
The DENIC at the beginning of of 2005 undertook a step toward internationalization of the business, when she applied for the administration of .net gTLD. The contract of the ICANN with VeriSign ran out in this year and it therefore a new registration place was searched. To that scarcely 9 million .de Domains again more than 5 million .net Domains would have been added, however the DENIC could not become generally accepted successfully against the other applicants, in particular VeriSign, Afilias, Sentan and Core++. The locking status report of Telcordia Technologies, which examined the applicants, contained however errors. For example was maintained, the DENIC uses a data base system even developed. Later the status report was corrected accordingly. The contracting party of the ICANN for .net gTLD remained nevertheless VeriSign.
The first successful assumption of a further Top level Domain beside .de succeeded in January 2006, when DENIC brought the German ENUM tree to 9.4.e164.arpa into the effect enterprise. Already since September 2002 one had accomplished a test operation, which on 15 August 2003 became then also official by the signing of an appropriate contract with the RegTP at that time. This means that now all telephone numbers, which begin with the German +49 and are ENUM able are administered by DENIC. Since September 2003 DENIC organizes the half-yearly ENUM day, on which in lectures on the possibilities of this technology one reports.
DE and 9.4.e164.arpaDE and 9.4.e164.arpaThe Top level Domain .de is the second largest of the world (conditions with 9.3 million Domains (of it 260,000 IDN Domains) after .com (44.7 million): At the end of of 2005). At the end of of 2004 had the DENIC of 84 coworkers and 217 members. The members of the DENIC EEC are traditionally Internet service tenderers, in addition, less specialized IT-companies were added in the last years. Name servers for .de are in Amsterdam, Berlin, Elmsford (the USA), Frankfurt, London, Santa Clara, Stockholm, Stuttgart, Tokyo and Vienna.
In their report on the activities 2004 the DENIC calls the year 2004 with consideration of the dynamic industry conditions altogether positive. Business expectations would have been exceeded as in the previous years. Financial security would have continued to increase. The requirements within the range of the technical services rose nevertheless faster than the incomes, so that one wanted to expand the business.
